Eat all the things!

We're going to tear out some evergreen bushes in the front yard and build flower beds, so I've been planning out what to grow in all the extra space and It's mostly edible. Because the idea of growing things from your yard, not just garden plot, fascinates me. Also, I hate spending as much money as we do on fruit, even though I have frequently passed up what I want because it's not in season or too expensive, so why not try growing most of our own? Hence we are planting two different types of currant bushes and I ordered ground cherry seeds (they grow in husks like tomatillos), in addition to peach trees, raspberries, blueberries, and grapes. I've gone hardcore about this and am going to fertlizie and mulch and prune like I should, too. I hope. :)

I've been reading Barbara Kingsolver's book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and it's basically one of my favorite books now (1/4 of the way through), even though she mistakenly thinks those dummies who don't believe in macro-evolution (all life developing from single cells) also don't believd in micro-evolution (the very evident mutations of species). Anyway, it's totally fascinating and insightful and thought-provoking and makes me want to fill up our yard with good things to eat. And naturally lots of those should be heirloom plants to keep more species from extinction....
