Lettuce and spinach

Our lettuce is beautiful - lots of different heirloom lettuces blended together. I think the red romaine is my favorite, though.

The spinach *was* beautiful, but something's been eating it. Weird, because it's right next to the lettuce and that is unharmed so far. I think it's either earwigs or slugs, but most probably earwigs - the creepiest garden insect after centipedes (even though those aren't really insects). We don't have sand or diatomacious earth, so i put some ground-up eggshells around the spinach and am hoping for the best now. But if you have any tips, please let me know!
