Of eyes and close encounters

Last night we were at a restaurant, celebrating Jason's grandpa's birthday, when someone across the room dropped a plate. I looked over at the commotion just in time for a shard of plate to smack me in the eye. It looked bad, so we went to the walk-in clinic right away. Turns out it wasn't scratched, so that's good. (And i already had antibiotic ointment to put in it, since Penelope really scratched it last week.) But part of me is glad for the drama and hassle because it meant finding another tie between here and Uganda - the doctor who inspected my eye is someone who i met years ago when she had a young man from Uganda staying with her, and when she was last in Uganda she met Bob, who is a good friend (i stayed with his family when i was there). Crazy and kind of awesome and maybe almost worth getting a piece of plate in the eye for?

Anyway, it reminded me of my old blog, karamojamanda.blogspot.com, where i posted about all things Africa that I encountered. And re-reading some of these posts makes me want to catch up on the world news. What IS the state of things in Zimbabwe right now? I haven't been thinking much past the state of my kids' diapers lately.
